When designing a living room, the sofa and chairs are typically the first items chosen to set the tone of the room. But the coffee table is the final piece that brings it all together. Coffee tables come in all different shapes, sizes and materials, so finding the perfect one to fit your space can be tricky. Follow these 3 tips for picking out the perfect coffee table to complement your living room design:

3 Tips for Selecting a Living Room Coffee Table

Choose the Perfect Coffee Table for Your Living Room with These Tips

1. Select a Size

As with any piece of furniture, size is critical when finding the right coffee table. The table should be about 18 inches away from any seating. This provides enough space for movement and sitting, while also making it easy to reach things on top of the table. You will want at least 2 to 3 feet of clearance for any walkways.

If you have a larger space, there can be a delicate balance between finding a coffee table that is big enough but doesn’t overwhelm the space. Typically, you don’t want the table to be longer than 2/3rd of your sofa’s length. There are several options to creatively stage a smaller table with other items to fill the space. For example, you could choose to have 2 smaller, coordinating coffee tables. You could also use some small, cube ottomans to add visual length to the table.

2. Consider Functionality

The more you intend to use your coffee table, the more thought you should give to how durable the materials are and how well the table will hold up over time. This is especially important if you have young children or pets who might climb on it. In this case, it is also best to avoid tables with sharp corners.

If you’re planning to use your coffee table as a resting place for drinks, consider selecting one with a lip to help contain spills. Also think about the height in comparison to your sofa to avoid awkward reaches when setting your drink down. Generally, 18 inches is the ideal height.

3. Envision the Table in Your Home

If you found a coffee table you love but need help visualizing it in your space, measure it out on the floor and mark the area with masking tape. Imagine maneuvering around the marked space to get a feel for how well the table might work for you.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to choose a coffee table that perfectly complements your décor and your lifestyle. For more interior design tips, check out these articles:
