A chandelier is a luxurious way to captivate the eye and add elegance to any space in your home. Here are a few tips to help you choose the best one for each room:
Tips for Selecting Chandeliers for Various Rooms in Your Home
Embrace Your Style
Don't worry if it's a traditional design for a contemporary room. A chandelier has the power to transcend its surroundings. While crystal and glass are classic and give a timeless look, chandeliers made of other materials like wood/wicker, fabric or metal can add texture, color and enhanced visual appeal to your room’s design. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and get creative.
Select an Appropriate Size
Chandeliers over tables should be about 12 inches narrower than the table surface, with at least 4 feet of distance from the nearest wall. For chandeliers mounted elsewhere, add the length and width of the area and convert this number to inches to correspond with a properly sized fixture. For example, a room that is 13-by-13 adds up to 26 inches, meaning that the chandelier should be about 26 inches wide.
Reach for the Right Height
Chandeliers are often mounted lower than other fixtures so that people can admire their details. However, you don’t want your chandelier to be too low. Its length should be proportionate to the height of the room; taller ceilings call for longer chandeliers. If you want to be able to adjust how low or high the fixture hangs, you can remove a few links in the chain or adjust the sliding mechanism (for chainless chandeliers).
Consider the Lighting
It is important to take your room’s lighting into account. Consider installing recessed lights and dimmers to keep other fixtures from distracting from your chandelier. This will also allow you to better control the light in the room to create the perfect atmosphere.
