Tips for Creating and Maintaining an Indoor Garden

No matter what type of plants you wish to grow, it is important to make sure you create the right environment for your indoor garden. People often think that as long as the plants are in a window sill and get watered daily, they will flourish. However, different plants require different levels of attention and tending to them takes careful preparation.

Tips to Successfully Cultivate Your Indoor Garden

Create a Space with Lighting Conducive to Plant Growth

You need to provide your indoor garden with the proper amount of light. You must be meticulous in your planning, as the UV rays from the sun can damage your plants. Not all plants need direct sunlight to grow. Many types of houseplants thrive in shade and indirect light. That being said, no matter what type of plant you choose, it’s important to know the amount of light it requires.

Rethink Your Watering Technique

Watering a plant from the top of the soil makes it difficult for the water to reach the plant's roots; this method may also flood the plant, causing the water to leak from the pot. A better method is to fill several dishes with water and position your plants in them. Make sure your plants' containers have holes in the bottom, so they can absorb the water. This ensures the water reaches the roots, and it minimizes drips and spills.

Remember to Fertilize Your Plants

Even if you use quality potting soil, it can be tricky for the plants in your indoor garden to get all of the nutrients they need. Just watering the plants is not enough. You must also regularly fertilize them. Follow the instructions for your preferred fertilizer to know how often to use it and whether or not you have to dilute it with water.

The most important factor when planning for your indoor garden is knowing which species you want to grow and understanding their various needs. Some plants need more sunlight than others.
