Keep Your Home Safe With These Tips

Even if you live in a gated community in a nice part of town, there are always steps you can take to increase the security of your home. Here are a few ways to protect your home and maintain a high level of privacy:

Store as Many Items as You Can in the Garage

The fewer items you leave on your porch and patio, the better. Burglars can easily spot grills, bikes and vehicles without ever having to set foot on your property. Items left in your yard or driveway are easy targets. Keep your cars, bikes and any other expensive items in the garage and away from prying eyes.

Don’t Hide Spare Keys Outside

It is common for homeowners to keep spare keys under front door mats or in plant pots near the door. However, this is unwise as it gives intruders direct access to your home. Avoid keeping your spare key(s) in common places that someone would be inclined to look.

Set Your Window Shades on a Timer

One of the benefits of opting for motorized window shades over manual window shades is that you can put the shades on a timer. When you leave your home, you can have the shades open and close throughout the day at preset intervals. This will give the illusion that someone is home, deterring burglars.

Install Automatic Lighting

Similar to setting a timer for your window shades, automatic lighting helps keep criminals at bay by making them realize you are home. The lights will automatically turn on whenever you enter a room and turn off when you exit. This also makes your home look more active, making it more difficult for intruders to enter unnoticed.

Get to Know Your Neighbors

Befriending your neighbors offers a greater sense of security when you’re home and when you’re away. Having someone you trust who lives on the same street as you gives you peace of mind by knowing someone is looking out for you. This is also beneficial when you’re going away for several days at a time, as your neighbors can keep an eye on your home or check on your pets.
