4 Ways to Improve Your Grill Setup

More than charcoal goes up in smoke when you move outdoors; your system does, too, reducing even the most organized cook to feeling like they have two left hands that’re only one step ahead of two left feet. Replicate the function and purpose to your outdoor grilling area with four sensible ideas:

  • Re-evaluate your gas grill – and replace it with an outdoor cooktop if you prefer to keep things on a lower flame. Not everyone is comfortable working with blistering hot temperatures and jutting flames. You'll get much more use from a cooktop, where you can sauté, steam, stir-fry, poach and, yes, sear a steak every bit as good as one you can prepare on a grill.
  • Put function first with a table and chairs. Different from an eating area, put a table that can double as counter space next to your grill so you can set down plates, spices, rubs and marinades, utensils and food that is ready to go on or come off the grill. If you're pressed for space, consider a folding table that doesn't have to be a permanent fixture outdoors. Place at least one chair near the grill so you can take a load off while you wait for food to cook – and another chair or two so others can socialize with you while you work.
  • Shield your grill area from the sun. Like many homeowners, you may not be making the most of your grill because it's one sweaty enterprise. You can't do much about heat from the grill, but you can mitigate the sun from beating down on your head and shining into your eyes by hanging an outdoor shade or facade to block the sun. A creative designer can help you create a plan that complements your space while keeping the shades a safe distance from the grill.
  • Install task lighting. Whoever said grilling is strictly a daytime pursuit? You can easily double the use you get from your grill by installing task lighting. After all, many people grill outdoors not only because they enjoy the flavor the grill imbues but also to prevent a buildup of indoor heat during the summer. With the right kind of task lighting, grilling is a task you can enjoy even when the sun goes down.
